Surfactant, refers to the substances which could change the interface state of solution system significantly after added very little amount. Having fixed hydrophilic and lipophilic group, it can be aligned at the surface of the solution.
The molecular structure of the surfactant is amphiphilic: one end is the hydrophilic group, and the other end is the hydrophobic group; hydrophilic group is usually a polar group, the substances such as carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid, sulfate, amino or amine and its salt, hydroxyl group, amide group, ether bond, etc. may also be used as a polar hydrophilic group; and a hydrophobic group is often non-polar hydrocarbon chain, for example 8 or more carbon atoms in the hydrocarbon chain.
Surfactant is divided into ionic type surfactant (including the cationic surfactant and anionic surfactant), non-ionic surfactants, amphoteric surfactants, compound surfactant, and other surfactants.
Surfactants become flexible, of extensive use fine chemical products due to its series of physical and chemical effects and the corresponding actual application of wetting or anti-stick, emulsifying or emulsion breaking, foaming or defoaming and solubilization, dispersion, washing, anti-corrosion, anti-static etc. Surfactants cover almost all of the fine chemicals industrial fields except being used as detergents in our daily lives.
